Date-stamped : 16 Oct95 - 10:30 3NAT-SHJ Match #4: Pakistan v West Indies Sharjah, 15 October 1995 West Indies romp to victory - Bandula Molligoda The West Indians playing at their one-day best beat Pakistan by four wickets to keep their chances of entering the Singer Cham- pions Trophy final alive here today. After restricting the Pakistanis to 194 for 9 in 50 overs, the Windies went on the rampage to destroy the Pakistanis scoring 195 for 6 wickets in 39.1 overs. The West Indian batsmen, especially Williams and Lara set the tone for their victory with blistering half centuries. West Indian openers Campbell and Williams started with a bang, bashing the Pakistani pacemen Younis and Javed with consummate ease. The West Indies who had lost their two earlier games had to win this one to keep their hopes of entering the final alive. Campbell went for 20 at 44 and the batting fireworks were really lit when Lara joined Williams. Both batsmen like to hit the ball and revelled at this with boun- daries coming easily which saw the scoreboard ticking and the Windies cruising to their first victory. After adding 65 for the second wicket Williams went for 57. Lara who came back to form with 52 had 5 fours and 2 sixes. Opener Simmons who was slipped down the order failed once again going LB to Akram for 1. Richardson made a patient 36 but left bowled by Saqlain only after victory was in sight. Chanderpaul went for 11. Pakistan who are assured of figuring in the final having won their first two games and leading the points table with 4 points, were put in to bat by Windies skipper Richardson called correctly the coin spun by match referee Raman Subba Row. Pakistan were sans opener Aamir Sohail and the dashing Saeed Anwar. Skipper Ramiz Raja who scored a great century against the West Indies in the previous game opened with the promising Salim Elahi. Once again the Windies pacemen, especially Ian Bishop contin- ued his erratic form in this tourney and began to spray the ball wide, most of the time. Elahi and Raja were not at all troubled by the pacemen and were giving well and setting the platform for a good score. They put on 74 for the first wicket before Raja was bowled by Simmons for 20. Elahi and a half fit Inzamam carried on the good work and added another 65 runs for the second wicket when Inzamam left for a well played 34. But with the dismissals of Elahi for 66 and Basit Ali for 25 a sudden rot set in and the Pakistanis could manage only 194 runs for 9 wickets in 50 overs. Elahi`s run out was the turning out where the Pakistanis also saw the run outs of Moin Khan, Zafar Iqbal and Saqlain Mush- taq. The Windies although they bowled 17 wides (Bishop 10, Cummins 1, Gibson 3 and Simmons 3 and a no ball from Bishop) did well to restrict the Pakistan.
