Date-stamped : 28 Jun95 - 18:25 Kent`s de Silva lining BY CLIVE ELLIS AT TRENT BRIDGE ARAVINDA de Silva is gradually warming to his task with Kent. If summer ever settles in, his batting feats are liable to move on to a Bradmanesque plane. The figures over the past week have been impressive enough: de Silva made 52 and 115 against Yorkshire and on Thursday he did full justice to a superb pitch at Trent Bridge with a majestic 225. Despite temperatures in the high 70s he batted throughout in T-shirt, shirt and sleeveless sweater. Daryl Foster, the Kent coach, takes it on the chin when it is suggested that a one-day mentality has pervaded Kent`s batting in the championship. "We`ve got some very attacking batsmen. I don`t criticise them for that, but they`ve just got to learn to be a bit more selec- tive with their shot-making." Foster, however, rejects accusations of inconsistency against de Silva - though he averages almost 56 he has been out for five or less in six of his 15 innings this season - and stresses what a good sign- ing he has been. De Silva even had the chance to show his flair for imaginative field placings yesterday as stand-in captain for Mark Benson, who contrived to sprain his right ankle in the dressing room before play started. Tim Robinson`s 196, a 71/2-hour triumph of concentration in- cluding 27 fours, guaranteed that Nottinghamshire would avoid the follow-on, but his decision to bat on to a declaration only 42 runs behind Kent`s total of 533 was less praiseworthy and presents the possibili- ty of contrivance tomorrow. Jimmy Hindson and Andy Pick had no reason to doubt Robinson`s judgment as they added 97 for Nottinghamshire`s ninth wicket. Robinson may have harboured notions of making early in-roads into Kent`s batting, but Trevor Ward and David Fulton were bliss- fully untroubled.
