Date-stamped : 05 Jul95 - 10:26 Glamorgan kept in check by spinners BY EDWARD BEVAN AT SWANSEA First day of four: Glamorgan 310-8 v Durham JAMES BOILING, who had previously taken only four championship wickets this season, and David Cox, a left-arm spinner playing his second championship game of the summer, restricted Glamorgan`s progress and brought Durham back into contention after Hugh Morris (106) had struck his fourth century of the season. Glamorgan slumped to the spinners in mid-innings, losing four wickets for only 14 runs after Morris had shared in two productive partnerships with Matthew Maynard and Tony Cottey. Boiling had Morris well caught at slip before dismissing Cottey, then Cox had Robert Croft caught at the wicket before disposing of Hamish Anthony, who appeared intent on hitting every ball out of the ground. Morris batted for more than five hours, striking 19 boundaries against the steady Durham attack who kept Glamorgan to under three runs an over. Maynard announced himself with successive boundaries and added 106 with his captain before he played over a delivery from Manoj Prabhakar. His 59 leaves him just 40 runs short of 1,000 first-class runs for the season. Following Glamorgan`s collapse much depended on Alastair Dalton, a young batsman playing his first game of the summer in place of David Hemp, who was left out. However this can surely only be a temporary setback for the gifted young left-hander who toured India with England A last winter. Dalton dealt competently with the spinners and the new ball, taken shortly before the close, but Prabhakar accounted for Colin Metson two overs before the end. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Blenkiron hits new heights BY EDWARD BEVAN AT SWANSEA Durham (331 & 343-4) bt Glamorgan (335 & 336-9 dec) by 6 wkts DARREN BLENKIRON, playing his fifth championship game of the season, produced a career-best score of 145 to steer Durham to their third championship win of the season at St Helen's yesterday. Blenkiron forged a match-winning partnership of 177 with Stewart Hutton (91) as Durham achieved a formidable target of 341 with 17.5 overs to spare. Hutton, batting at No 3 because of an injury to John Morris, who came in at the fall of the third wicket, shared in Durham's third-highest third-wicket partnership, having been involved in the other two with Graeme Fowler and Morris. At lunch, Durham were 84 for two and from then on the third-wicket pair adapted themselves perfectly to the situation. Hutton reached 50 from 94 balls, while Blenkiron took one delivery less to reach his half-century. Blenkiron reached his hundred with two boundaries before eventually chipping Hamish Anthony to mid-off. Morris then guided Durham to victory on a pitch which was expected to turn, but instead played easier on the final day than at any stage of the game.
