Date-stamped : 30 Aug95 - 10:28 Ireland v Scotland, First One-day Rathmines, 13 August 1995 Ireland fail to capitalise on Doak - Peter O`Reilly THE TRAGIC death on Saturday morning of Hugh Stevenson, the chairman of the Scottish selectors, overshadowed all cricketing matters at Rathmines over the weekend. As a mark of respect, the Irish Cricket Union abandoned the annual three-day fixture but a 55-over game was organised for yesterday and the sides managed to produce an exciting finish, with Scotland winning by eight runs in the final over of the day. In a game where the balance of power switched a number of times, the most decisive turn of events occurred in the 50th over of Ireland`s reply to Scotland`s 234 for 7. Garfield Harrison and Uel Graham had manoeuvred themselves to a stage where they needed just under a run a ball when Graham chanced a questionable second run to the short third man boundary. Had the option been there, umpire Louis Hogan would surely have sought the assistance of the action replay camera but he trusted his own judgement and gave Graham out. When, three balls later, Harrison charged at George Reifer, the bowler slipped in a leg-side wide and his `keeper Alec Davies made an excellent stumping. From that point, the task was just beyond Ireland`s tail against Scotland`s well-organised out- cricket. Perhaps the biggest revelation of the day was the batting of Neil Doak, whose 27-ball innings of 43 had actually put the Irish into a winning position following a stagnant mid-innings period. He hit three sixes in that time, including the `shot of the day` over extra cover. A 40-over game has been arranged for today, for which caps will not be awarded.
