Date-stamped : 30 Aug95 - 10:28 Ireland v Scotland, Second One-day Rathmines, 14 August 1995 Humiliating defeat for Ireland - Peter O`Reilly SCOTTISH slow left-armer Andy Tennant looked vaguely embarrassed as his team-mates applauded him off the field at Rathmines after they had beaten Ireland by 56 runs in yesterday`s 40- over inter- national. After taking 5 for 19 in 8 overs, Tennant should have had little reason to blush but he knew as well as anyone else that appalling Irish shotselection was the main reason for this result. Yes, the pitch did offer the spinners some assistance but that does not provide an excuse for this abysmal Irish performance. Only Justin Benson displayed the technical know-how to deal with the Scottish trio of spinners but when he finally chipped George Reifer to extra cover, Ireland had been bowled out for 98 in 32.2 overs - their most humiliating defeat in some time. Players and coach may find some consolation in a reasonable fielding and bowling performance but in fact, the Scots` batting, Reifer apart, had been only marginally less pathetic. After the traditional three-day game had been abandoned on Saturday and yesterday`s game was classified as `uncapped friendly`, most batsmen were willing to donate their wickets generously. Admittedly, some positive aspects emerged from the weekend. The CYM pairing of Eddie Moore and Conor Hoey bowled adequately on their return to international duty. With his entertaining cameo on Saturday, Neil Doak showed a flamboyant side to his batting that had previously been dormant while, conversely, Benson con- tinued to curb his adventurous approach with two responsible in- nings. On the other hand, two younger players begin the Development tour to England and Holland with some ground to make up in order to justify the selectors continued faith in them. Jason Molins played two irresponsible strokes to get out cheaply while Stephen Ogilby continued to make basic errors behind the stumps, as he had done during the Triple Crown.
