Date-stamped : 07 May95 - 22:22 SUNLG: Glamorgan v Northamptonshire, Cardiff, 7 May 1995 Unbeaten James makes it five in a row - Edward Bevan Glamorgan (195-6) bt Northants (194-8) by four wickets STEVE JAMES led Glamorgan to their fifth successive success in all competitions with three balls remaining in front of a capaci- ty crowd at Sophia Gardens yesterday. James (93 not out) anchored the innings after Northants had been restricted to 194 for eight on a good batting pitch, sharing use- ful partnerships with the middle order as Glamorgan maintained the required run-rate. They needed five to win from the final over after Paul Taylor had bowled an exemplary seven-over spell, but Hamesh Anthony complet- ed a satisfactory return to Wales by helping James to score the winning runs. James, who would not have been included in Glamorgan`s side had Hugh Morris been fit at the start of the season, has been in for- midable early- season form, scoring three consecutive fifties in the Benson and Hedges competition. Glamorgan, who had to score at almost a five an over, were given a good start by James and David Hemp before Hemp, after striking Kevin Curran into the River Taff over long-on, was run out at- tempting an ambitious second run to the extra-cover boundary. After Rob Bailey had won the toss he departed to the second ball of the innings but Richard Montgomerie and Curran shared a pro- ductive stand of 90 for the second wicket before Montgomerie was smartly stumped off Adrian Dale`s medium pace. Northants` middle-order, apart from Yorkshire-born Tim Walton (56), failed to accelerate against a steady Glamorgan attack with Anthony taking three wickets. The West Indian all-rounder, who had replaced Ottis Gibson as the Welsh county`s overseas signing, arrived on Friday and proved a capable deputy for the injured Steve Barwick. Walton, drafted into Northants`s team instead of the indisposed Allan Lamb and Alan Fordham, used his long reach to play some handsome strokes through the offside and scored his runs from 56 deliveries before driving Dale to mid-off. Lamb injured his wrist fielding on Thursday while Fordham was struck on the body and Northants, after their good start to the season, will hope that two of their experienced batsmen will be fit for tomorrow`s Benson and Hedges game against Yorkshire.
