Date-stamped : 07 May95 - 22:23 SUNLG: Leicestershire v Yorkshire, Leicester, 7 May 1995 Leics redeem themselves - Neil Hallam Leicestershire (200-7) bt Yorkshire (170) by 30 runs LEICESTERSHIRE, "outplayed in all departments" according to their captain Nigel Briers after a three-day, nine-wicket championship defeat by Yorkshire on Saturday, did much to redeem themselves on their way to a 30-run victory. With their championship failure coming straight after a humiliat- ing Benson & Hedges Cup defeat by Minor Counties, Leicestershire`s players had endured a chastening few days in which their competitive character was questioned. But the energy and purpose which made them championship runners- up last season was in evidence again as they survived an epidemic of five run-outs to reach 200 for seven after being put in and dislodged Yorkshire for 170 with nine balls to spare. Briers` insistence that Leicestershire had given a false account of themselves was upheld most forcibly as Yorkshire lapsed to 65 for five in pursuit of what seemed a less than daunting target on a straightforward Grace Road pitch. Martyn Moxon was the victim of a stunning catch in the gully off a full-blooded cut, David Byas was beaten by a ball which nipped away and Michael Bevan looked far from comfortable before twitch- ing at a ball he was shaping to run to third man. The bristle and economy of Gordon Parsons pushed Yorkshire behind the clock and Craig White, dropped on the midwicket boundary by Ben Smith, was bowled by Vince Wells next ball. It was not until Richard Blakey and Darren Gough joined forces that rapid erosion of Yorkshire`s batting was interrupted. John Dakin, who overcame a wayward start to bowl a testing spell, broke through when Gough heaved across the line and Yorkshire`s lingering hopes died when Blakey perished to a swift throw from cover in pursuit of an improbable second run. Leicestershire, whose first wicket yielded 90 in 19 overs, seemed on course for a much bigger total until eagerness lapsed into indiscretion. Briers was run out by a brilliant pick and throw from Bevan at cover, Hansie Cronje fell lunging at Stemp`s quicker ball and Vince Wells, who made 79 off 90 balls and hit 11 fours, was run out. Ben Smith and Darren Maddy were also run out but Yorkshire`s hopes were suppressed by the accuracy of the Leicestershire sea- mers.
