Date-stamped : 16 May95 - 10:27 SUNLG: Surrey v Durham, The Foster's Oval, 14 May 1995 Durham target for Brown fireworks - Doug Ibbotson Surrey (190-3) bt Durham (189-8) by 7 wkts A DURHAM total that fell short of 200, though better than it might have been, offered no challenge to some of the most explo- sive batting in county cricket. Indeed, by the time the Surrey innings was in its eighth over and Alistair Brown had smitten Alan Walker for his second six, an or- bital pull towards the midwicket gas holder, the score was hur- tling through the forties, aided and abetted by Darren Bicknell. Though Bicknell fell to a fine catch behind the wicket for 19, Brown - deftly accompanied by Alec Stewart - pressed on to a half-century off 39 balls. Subsequently, a straight six off James Boiling brought him his 2,000th Sunday League run. Dropped in the deep on 71, he made only eight more before pulling the same bowler to mid-wicket; by now, however, Surrey were within 70 runs of victory with 21 overs and eight wickets in hand. The last over of the Durham innings, bowled by Adam Hollioake and containing a no-ball donkey drop and a top-edged four over Stewart`s head, epitomised the unreality of an occasion once described within the PA`s repetitive prattle as "this aqua exity and law match". Tony Pigott produced the tidiest Surrey bowling, reflected in an eight-over haul of three for 34.
