Date-stamped : 16 May95 - 10:27 SUNLG: Worcestershire v Middlesex, Worcester, 14 May 1995 Moody in charge again - D.J. Rutnagur Worcs (199-6) bt Middx (122) by 77 runs THE rich vein of Tom Moody`s form, which manifested itself in the only effortless innings played on an indifferent New Road pitch, boosted Worcestershire to a second win in the League - achieved as comfortably as their first, last week, at Chelmsford. Although the argument dragged on until less than seven overs remained, the issue was as good as settled by the 22nd over of Middlesex`s reply. By that time the cream of their batting had been skimmed off and only Paul Weekes gave any sort of indication that the challenge could be sustained. But once he was run out, reducing Middlesex to 92 for six in the 23rd over, the remaining play was turned into an absolute formality. The pitch, never amenable to free strokeplay, became increasingly variable in pace and bounce as the match progressed and by dint of luck with the toss, Worcestershire had the best of it. While Gavin Haynes and David Leatherdale also made very signifi- cant contributions in terms of substance and momentum Wor- cestershire were indebted to Moody for imposing his authority at a time when the bowling was most challenging. He scored 57 off 74 balls, with three fours and a six before Phil Tufnell lured him out of his ground and had him stumped. Three of Middlesex`s first four batsmen were dismissed trying to drive. Mike Gatting was bowled by one that kept low while Jason Pooley and Mark Ramprakash were caught at cover.
