Date-stamped : 29 May95 - 14:26 SUNLG: Lancashire v Nottinghamshire, Old Trafford, 28 May 1995 Lloyd leads Lancashire to victory - Brian Bearshaw Lancs (173-6) bt Notts (172-5) by four wickets LANCASHIRE`S breakneck start to the season continued yesterday when they took their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12. But unlike the Benson and Hedges Cup match early in the month when Lancashire demolished Nottinghamshire after scoring a record 353 for seven, they were made to work hard for their success this time. Nottinghamshire might have thought they were home and dry when Lancashire were 94 for six in reply to their own meagre-looking 172 for five. But a marvellous, exciting partnership between Graham Lloyd and Ian Austin, who put on 79 in 12 overs for the seventh wicket, carried Lancashire to a last-over victory which looked to have slipped from their grasp. Lloyd, who went in with Lancashire 48 for three in the 17th over, took control when his captain, Mike Watkinson, was fifth out six overs later, stumped as he strolled down the wicket to the left- arm spin of Jimmy Hindson. He kept the scoreboard ticking in exactly the way that Neil Fair- brother does, and Harry Pilling did before him, finding the gaps, dashing up and down the crease as he hit only two boundaries in his unbeaten 59 in 57 balls, his third half-century in three Sun- day innings. Austin again proved what a valuable all-round player he is as he matched Lloyd`s all-action approach by scoring 36 not out in 39 balls. Nottinghamshire grew more and more ragged as they saw victory snatched from under their noses, an attitude that was emphasised when Kevin Evans bowled a wide with the first ball of the final over to seal Lancashire`s win. Lancashire bowled particularly well to contain a Nottinghamshire side who looked as if they had not fully recovered from the drub- bing of three weeks ago. However, they really should have stretched themselves further after passing 100 with only one wicket down and still having five wickets in hand at the end. Tim Robinson, who has scored 136 in the current championship match at Liverpool, again led the Nottinghamshire batting with 63.
