Date-stamped : 11 Jun95 - 22:24 Lancashire lose out BY DAVID GREEN AT OLD TRAFFORD Glamorgan (162) bt Lancashire (153) by 9 runs LANCASHIRE appeared certain to maintain their 100 per cent Sunday record when they dismissed Glamorgan for 162, Gary Yates taking four for 40, but they fell foul of some tigerish Glamorgan out- cricket. Glamorgan fielded and caught brilliantly to take over at the top of the table, with Tony Cottey and Matthew Maynard outstanding, and their bowling was generally very well-directed, Steve Barwick (two for 16) and Steve Watkin (three for 28), making major contributions and Roland Lefebvre also accurate. The pitch was true but too slow to encourage stroke makers but Lancashire, with all 11 of their side having made first-class centuries, will not be too happy that they allowed themselves to be almost completely bogged down. After 21 overs they were 58 for five, having hardly struck a blow in anger. Key dismissals were those of John Crawley, dragging on aiming to force Lefebvre, and Neil Fairbrother, run out by Watkin`s direct hit from short third man. Wasim Akram and Mike Watkinson dragged Lancashire back into the game but left in successive overs, Wasim caught behind cutting and Watkinson giving Cottey a fierce return catch. When Maynard caught Yates marvellously running back towards deep mid-wicket Lancashire needed 34 of 27 balls with their last pair together. Warren Hegg and Glen Chapple took them almost to the wire before the latter holed out with five balls remaining. Earlier, Glamorgan made a brisk start with Steve James quickly into his stride with a square cut for four off Chapple and Hugh Morris joining in as he lifted a short one from Wasim high over square leg for four. The visitors had reached 47 without loss in the 10th over when James aimed to cut a ball from Yates that was too straight for the purpose and was bowled. From then on Lancashire`s bowlers rapidly gained control. A tidy spell from Ian Austin pinned down Maynard who tried to pull a shorter ball and gave a return catch. Morris, also aiming to cut Yates, was caught behind, then David Hemp was run out in a mix-up with Cottey. Cottey and Robert Croft seemed for a while to be doing a competent repair job until the former was caught as he tried to hit Yates over the top. In the same over Hamish Anthony rather unluckily played on. When Croft sliced Wasim to gully, it seemed unlikely that Glamorgan would pass 150 but their last pair, Watkin and Barwick, survived any number of narrow squeaks to add 21 together and ensure they had something to bowl against.
