Date-stamped : 26 Jun95 - 10:27 SUNLG: Hampshire v Worcestershire, Southampton, 25 June 1995 Moody is forced to wear a tie - Pat Symes Hants (275-9) tied with Worcs (275-9) NOT even an innings of exceptional quality from their new captain Tom Moody could quite fashion an improbable Worcestershire victo- ry at Southampton where the sides tied after a thrilling last over. Worcestershire needed nine from Heath Streak`s final over and, with the last pair at the crease, two from the last ball. Phil Newport scampered a single and each side had to make do with two points. The excitement of the finish almost overshadowed Moody`s calcu- lated belligerence earlier in the innings, which ended with a catch on the mid-wicket boundary as he attempted his sixth six. Two of the sixes, off Raj Maru and Shaun Udal, went out of the ground and there were also seven fours among the 76 balls he faced. His dismissal at 163 left Worcestershire needing 113 off 16 overs to overhaul Hampshire`s formidable 275 for nine, in which Paul Whitaker and Matthew Keech came close to recording their first centuries in the Sunday competition. Whitaker and Keech put on 158 in only 16 overs for the second wicket as Hampshire took full advantage of Moody`s decision to field first on a benign wicket. Keech, who had never got beyond 58 in any competition, stroked 98 off only 61 balls before being bowled while Whitaker fell three short of a century on consecu- tive days. But from a position of authority at 216 for one, Hampshire fell away against Stuart Lampitt`s tenacious attack, losing eight wickets in adding 57. Lampitt yorked Keech and also sent back Whitaker, Mark Nicholas and Udal in a crucial spell in which he took four for nine in 20 balls.
