Date-stamped : 26 Jun95 - 10:27 SUNLG: Surrey v Glamorgan, The Foster's Oval, 25 June 1995 Barwick baffles dejected Surrey - Simon Hughes Glamorgan (154-1) bt Surrey (152) by 9 wkts DURING an episode of Fawlty Towers, Basil, in a deep depression, finds the Samaritans are engaged. The same predicament must have befallen the Surrey batsmen yesterday because they were certainly hell bent on committing hara-kiri. Their total of 152 on a good one-day pitch would have been inade- quate against Clapham Common Old Boys, and Glamorgan put it into perspective by knocking the runs off in only 20.1 overs. Nothing in the first half-hour of the match pointed to such a non-event. Surrey rattled up 38 in the first five overs, sparked by Alistair Brown`s familiar mixture of thrash and dash, but when he dragged one on attempting a walking forehand pass, the innings went into reverse. Jason Ratcliffe swatted a short ball straight down deep square leg`s throat, Adam Hollioake poked a slower one to short extra and Nadeem Shahid was lbw shuffling across, first ball. When Mark Butcher missed with a vigorous sweep, Surrey were 73 for five. Though David Ward looked out of touch, he tried hard to rectify matters, but Glamorgan`s canny bowling - based around Steve Barwick`s tantalising off cutters - and athletic fielding, restricted him to one boundary in 28 overs. Barwick varies his pace subtly, bowls to a meticulously placed field - only two in front of the wicket on the off side - and has the priceless asset of Matthew Maynard at midwicket. As yet, no- one in the country has unravelled his method, and yesterday he conceded only 13 off 7.5 overs. Glamorgan`s other major Sunday asset is their positive, self- assured batting. The openers carted 73 off the first nine overs, Hugh Morris cutting busily, Steve James on-driving and running the fielders ragged. When Morris was lbw, Maynard went berserk, slaughtering the medium pacers with pure, clean strikes. Twice he drove Butcher for straight sixes and dispatched Hollioake`s ami- able seamers as if batting in a beer match. James`s fifty off 37 balls arrived almost imperceptibly. By 6pm the mauling was over, and Welsh supporters in full voice. Surrey meanwhile have not won a match in any competition for five weeks, but it is too early to contemplate suicide.
