SUNLG R17: 27 Aug 1995, REPORT

SUNLG round-up: Six-hitting Symonds settles the issue

ANDREW SYMONDS, the Gloucestershire batsman who set world six-
hitting records against Glamorgan last week with 16 in an innings
and 20 in the match, all but ended the Welsh county`s Sunday
League title hopes at Ebbw Vale with another violent innings.

Gloucestershire, chasing 154 on a slow pitch, were struggling at
23 for two from nine overs when Symonds came in. He hit seven
sixes, five of them off the normally unsloggable Steve Barwick,
and four fours in his 69, scoring his runs off only 35 balls.
Gloucestershire won with 65 balls and six wickets left.

Steve James, the Glamorgan opener, made a splendid 78 but Mark
Alleyne restricted their progress, taking five for 28 from his
eight overs.

Lancashire remain in fifth place after their 15-run victory at
Portsmouth, but were given quite a fright by bottom-of-the-table
Hampshire.

The home side were in a winning position when, replying to
Lancashire`s 196 for eight, they needed 90 off the last 18 overs
with eight wickets in hand. Peter Martin then changed the com-
plexion of the match by taking three wickets in his next four
overs. He finished with four for 29.

Paul Johnson and Chris Cairns put on 158 in only 16 overs to pro-
pel Nottinghamshire to a thrilling seven-wicket victory at
Northampton after the home side had posted 249 for six.

Johnson`s undefeated 136 off 98 balls featured five sixes and 14
fours while Cairns hit five sixes and five fours in his 70 from
just 44 balls, including 22 off one Rob Bailey over.

Northamptonshire had three fifties in their total, from Richard
Montgomerie, Bailey and Mal Loye but Johnson and Cairns saw Notts
home with 6.4 overs remaining.

Adrian Rollins was another batsman in explosive form. An unbeaten
126 from 87 balls, his maiden one-day century, helped Derbyshire
to victory on a faster scoring rate over Surrey at rain-hit Der-
by.

A stand of 190 in 25 overs between Nadeem Shahid, who made 101
from 84 balls, and Darren Bicknell, who hit 91, was the founda-
tion of Surrey`s 269 for seven.

Rollins, whose previous Sunday best was 57, reached his hundred
off 68 balls as Derbyshire passed their reduced target of 249
from 37 overs with 13 balls to spare.

Ben Smith`s 115 from 95 balls counted for nothing as Somerset,
needing 84 from the last 10 overs, beat Leicestershire with two
balls remaining at Weston-super-Mare. Peter Bowler and Piran
Holloway, with 76 and 66 respectively, ensured Somerset surpassed
their target of 232.

Michael Bevan`s all-round contribution - 81 runs and three wick-
ets for 35 - proved decisive in Yorkshire`s 18-run victory over
Middlesex at Headingley.

Owais Shah, 16, from Karachi, hit a maiden fifty for the visitors
but they never threatened Yorkshire`s total of 161 in a match re-
duced to 37 overs per side.

Only 14.2 overs were possible at Hartlepool in three sessions in-
terrupted by rain. In that time, Sussex plundered 89 for the loss
of three wickets against Durham.
