Date-stamped : 04 Sep95 - 10:28 SUNLG: Essex v Derbyshire, Chelmsford, 3 September 1995 Essex climbed to fourth place despite having to defend a mod- est total of 196 for seven against Derbyshire at Chelmsford. They weathered a rapid opening stand of 101 between Chris Adams, who hit five fours and a six in his 54, and Kim Barnett (47) to win by 24 runs. The only other partnership of any substance was one of 22 between David Cullinan and John Owen. A depleted Derbyshire attack did well to contain Essex to 107 after 30 overs. But then Graham Gooch, the former England cap- tain, cut loose to score 63 off 53 balls, with six fours and a six. Gooch had a distinguished match, for he also took three brilliant catches to hasten Derbyshire`s collapse - the most outstanding being one off his own bowling to dismiss Colin Wells.
