Injury shrouds McMillan's hopes of facing Australia

19 February 1997

SOUTH African all-rounder Brian McMillan's fitness for the first Test against Australia is in doubt only 10 days before the match in Johannesburg.

McMillan was seeking medical attention yesterday for a nagging ankle injury that appeared to restrict him severely when his Western Province team lost to Australia by 32 runs in the opening tour game.

Appearing for the first time in three weeks after injuring the ankle in South Africa's third Test against India last month, McMillan bowled only four overs and scored a total of only 12 runs in Western Province's two innings.

John Commins, the Western Province captain, said that McMillan is still battling to recover from what he described as ``a minor aggravation'' to his ankle injury but he did not believe it was serious. ``He didn't want to aggravate the injury any further by bowling,'' Commins added.
