Rhodes, a veteran of 28 Tests, has been overlooked since the first Test against India at Ahmadabad last November. And Kallis, who played two Tests against England 14 months ago, has been brought back to bat at No 3.

A brilliant fielder, Rhodes has forced his way back into the injury-plagued South African team with three consecutive centuries in the domestic championship, despite being unable to bat in the current match against the tourists after collapsing from dehydration.

Brian McMillan is the only omission from the South African side who played against India in the third and final Test at the Wanderers in January. One of the best all-rounders in the world, he has chronic inflammation of ligaments behind his left ankle. ``We are thinking about the long-term implications,'' said Peter Pollock, convener of the selection committee.

The selectors have included only one spinner - left armer Paul Adams.

Meanwhile, Australia warmed up for the Test with an eight-wicket win over Natal - the fourth successive win of their nine-week tour.

Michael Bevan again proved his value as an improving wrist spinner with four wickets as Natal were skittled out for 112 in the second innings. Left to make 78 runs to win, Australia lost their two openers for only nine runs. But Ian Healy and Matthew Elliott shared an 72-run stand to steer them home. Bevan will form a spin combination with leg-spinner Shane Warne after his seven-wicket match haul assured him a Test place.
