Date-stamped : 06 Mar97 - 18:29 6 March 1997 Peaceful encounter promised THE Test series between the West Indies and India that opens at Sabina Park this morning promises to be free of the sledging which marred the Windies` recent tour of Australia. On the eve of the Test match, both teams promised good, clean and exciting cricket. "We never indugle in that sort of thing," said West Indies manager Clive Lloyd in response to a question at a press confer- ence at the Pegasus Hotel yesterday morning. "We don`t do it, and we will not do it; and I know the Indians do not do it either." "We play cricket in the finest spirit," said D.V. Subba Rao, the manager of the Indian team, "we always uphold the highest tradi- tion of the game. That is how we play the game." The pitch was also a topic of debate and as far as the two cap- tains were concerned, after the slow, low pitch prepared for the four-day game between the tourists and Jamaica which ended on Monday they were hoping for a better surface. "It provided only marginal turn and side-way movement during the Jamaica match," said Walsh. "It was not ideal for cricket. They have promised however that it will be better for the Test match, that it will be a bit faster and that it will bounce a bit more. I am hoping that it will be so." India`s Sachin Tendulkar agreed with his West Indian counterpart. "It was very slow and low. It was not easy to play shots on it. Not enough bounce.
