Date-stamped : 02 Dec96 - 10:13 2 December 1996 Brilliant Le Comber Creates Traffic Hazard by John Brooks A remarkable innings of 155 not out by Karen le Comber took East-Shirley to a six-wicket win over the previously unbeaten Lancaster Park in the women's senior cricket competition on Saturday. A delighted le Comber labelled the innings as her best, and extolled the virtues of batting on Burwood Park. In the space of a week, and three innings, she has scored more than 300 runs and been dismissed only once. Facing up to Lancaster Park's 251, le Comber blasted the ball all round the ground. She brought up her century with an on-drive, but her most potent shot was the lofted drive, which produced six sixes and created a traffic hazard on New Brighton Road. In a vital second-wicket partnership, she added 148 with Helen Watson, and then a further 60 with Jess Ramage. The win came up in the 47th over, with an off-drive. The Park innings had been a solid team effort, with all the top order reaching double figures. Debbie Hockley and Trudy Anderson figured in an opening stand of 106 before the former was run out. Another fruitful partnership was between Jo Strachan and Paula Flannery with 50 for the fifth wicket. East's most successful bowler was Tina McCormack, with three for 36. In contrast to the high scores at Burwood Park, the match between Marist and St Albans was a low-scoring affair. St Albans made only 88; Sally Frahm, Jo Lawler, and Susie Burrows all got starts but no-one was able to put together a sizeable score. Marist's Fleur McKechnie and Caroline Wethey had the innings in tatters at 44 for seven, but a sound unbeaten 20 by Jane Geary got the side through to double that score. The Marist innings was an even worse debacle, with medium pacers Anna Morris and Geary having the side in dire straits at 25 for five. Kim Bowron was able to stop the slide, but Geary (three for 17) and Kirsty Craig (three for 9) wrapped up the innings for 61, carrying St Albans to second place in the competition.
