Date-stamped : 06 Jan97 - 10:34 24 December 1996 Country Grabs Points Canterbury Country endured some anxious and contentious moments before taking eight points for its first innings win against West Coast in a Fuji-Xerox elimination cricket match at Nimmo Park, Greymouth, at the weekend. A competitive West Coast made 201 in its first innings and had Country two for two. It could have been six for three wickets as Canterbury cricketer Brad Doody survived a disputed catch on the boundary. After a long debate, he was awarded a six and then dominated the bowling. He was dismissed soon after reaching his half-century when he mistimed a pull. West Coast reduced Country to 130 for six before captain John Hamilton steered his team to the first innings win. Mark Birchfield, with two half-centuries, was the backbone to the West Coast batting, while Kevin Thomas and the unlucky Mark de Goldie bowled well. Dean Sara and Brent Lewis were the most successful Country bowlers, while new wicketkeeper Geoff Walford showed promise, snaring four victims, two of them stumped, in his new role. Scores: West Coast 201 (Mark Birchfield 52; Dean Serra 4-43, Brent Lewis 3-28) and 191-5 (Birchfield 67no, C Wright 42, Mark de Goldie 39) lost on the first innings to Canterbury Country 205-7 dec. (Brad Doody 51, John Hamilton 43no, Mark Patterson 31). Source :: The Christchurch Press (http://www.press.co.nz) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
