Date-stamped : 17 Dec96 - 06:18 16 December 1996 HSOB Opens Gap On Rivals Little resistance from Sydenham High School Old Boys have charged to a 25-point lead after just four rounds of the Trust Bank Trophy senior club competition following their rout of Sydenham on Saturday. It was the third haul of maximum points for Old Boys -- their other match was tied. The two-day championship now takes a break during the holiday period. Burnside West-University, Riccarton, and Lancaster Park all made some ground to share second as a result of their outright wins over St Albans, Woolston WMC, and Marist respectively. Burnside-West left-arm slow bowler Hamish Kember collected a match haul of 15 wickets to equal the effort of Old Boys left-arm seamer Chris Flanagan earlier in the day. Lancaster Park had Marist beaten by mid-afternoon while the Riccarton-Woolston WMC match featured some outstanding individual efforts. Three half centuries were scored and two five-wicket hauls were taken. The Old Collegians-East Christchurch Shirley match was drawn but noteworthy for the second half century in the game by East's Scott Pawson, a feat matched by Neil Maxwell (Riccarton). Points after four rounds: Old Boys 58, Riccarton 33, Lancaster Park 33, Burnside-West University 33, St Albans 23, East-Shirley 22, Old Collegians 20, Marist 16, Sydenham 8, Woolston WMC 8. Quick demise Forty minutes play was sufficient for Old Boys to wrap up the Sydenham second innings and win by an innings at Sydenham Park. Todd Harris and Greg O'Reilly put on 22 for the ninth wicket, both playing some excellent strokes. Chris Flanagan was again the most demanding and took his tally to 15 for the match, two shy of the record club wicket aggregate, 17, set by Reg Read in 1917-18. Flanagan took his haul of two-day competition wickets to 39 while Shane Bond was an effective partner. Sydenham's first innings score of 45, which consigned it to defeat, was not its lowest against Old Boys -- it made only 25 in 1972-73. Tolley in the spotlight The brilliant batting of English professional Chris Tolley ensured Lancaster Park wasted no time in beating Marist at Ensors Rd. Park's target was only a paltry 77 but Tolley sparkled with his exquisite driving, scoring 55 of the required runs from 65 balls and with ten fours and a six. His best support came from fellow Englishman Jim Hindson, after Simon Grainger claimed two cheap wickets. Marist needed to bat for the better part of two sessions when it resumed, trailing by 85 on the first innings. It began promisingly with Ash Ross and Chris Mercer denying Park any wickets for over an hour. But the introduction of Chris Wilson and his lively outswingers along with Tolley broke the 76-run second-wicket stand and wickets fell steadily. Wilson finished with four wickets leaving Marist, the defending champion, to contemplate another early finish. Kember shines A match-winning performance by Burnside West-University captain Hamish Kember was the feature of an exciting game at Burnside Park. Resuming at 112 for six wickets St Albans fell short by one run of the home side's first innings total. Kember's left-arm spinners took the last wicket to give him eight for the innings. Kember also destroyed St Albans in the second innings taking the first four wickets and seven in the innings. The St Albans left-arm spinner James Ward also made his mark taking nine wickets in the match. A seventh-wicket stand of 65 between Ben Harris and Ward took St Albans to within 30 of Burnside's first innings total but there was little resistance when Harris was out at 164. Carlos Prowse held Burnside's second innings together with a patient knock of 30 and Gerald Barrett provided some fireworks with 45 from 41 balls. Grant Lucas was the only St Albans batsman to play Kember confidently and when he fell with nine overs remaining the rest soon followed. Aussie to the fore The multiple talents of expatriate Australian Neil Maxwell helped Riccarton to obtain outright points over Woolston WMC after Woolston comfortably obtained a first innings lead. Maxwell scored 115 runs in two innings and bowled well, especially in Woolston's second innings. He took a brilliant gully catch to dismiss Anup Nathu which turned the game in his side's favour. Three other players featured in an enthralling day's play. Woolston's young off-spinner Stephen Gibson shone with his first five-wicket bag, a feat emulated by Riccarton's Wayne Stead in Woolston's second innings. Tim Walton's innings of 63 runs was a beacon in an otherwise rocky batting display as Woolston strove to obtain the necessary 162 runs to give it outright victory, a target it failed to reach by 39 runs. Old Collegians win points Old Collegians satisfied themselves with first innings points against East Shirley at Elmwood Park. Set 170 to win in around 43 overs Old Collegians lost three early wickets before Michael Riach and Campbell Galletly added 54 for the fourth wicket. However, Riach's dismissal at 89 triggered another collapse. Old Collegians lost four wickets for 11 runs, three to veteran off-spinner Tony Gray. East had 15 overs to grab the remaining three wickets but it proved beyond it as Old Collegians blocked out. Earlier in the day, Old Collegians had comfortably taken first innings points thanks to an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 74 between Galletly (29 not out) and Michael McIntyre (40 not out). East responded in positive fashion with Scott Pawson scoring a majestic half century, his second of the match. Shirley Boys High School student Michael Papps scored a delightful 42 as East posted a sporting target.
