Date-stamped : 09 Dec96 - 06:36 9 December 1996 Easy Win For Lancaster Lancaster Park enjoyed an emphatic nine-wicket win over St Albans in a Canterbury women's cricket top-of-the-table clash on Saturday. In the other match, East-Shirley again relished the batting conditions at Burwood Park to comfortably account for Marist. Batting first at Ensors Road, St Albans struggled for runs off the accurate new-ball bowlers, Helen Fouhy and Natasha Cox. Its best partnership was 38 for the second wicket between Jo Lawler and Nicola Payne, who top-scored with 22. Paula Flannery and Debbie Hockley continued to keep a stranglehold on the scoring, Flannery getting 2-12 off 10 overs and Hockley 4-14 off eight overs. Later in the innings, Natalie Glubb made 17 but St Albans was dismissed on the slow pitch for a modest 97. Lancaster Park openers Hockley and Trudy Anderson shared a solid stand of 43 before Hockley was bowled by Sarah Lloyd. Anderson went on to a half-century, steering her side to its easy win with the support of Flannery. At Burwood Park, Karen le Comber was again in rollicking form, blasting 85 runs from the first 22 overs of East-Shirley's innings. She put on a rapid 123 for the first wicket with Mandy Ormandy. Ormandy held the innings together with a valuable 77 not out, assisted by Kimberley Minogue and Helen Watson, enabling East-Shirley to reach 259 for five. Marist had solid efforts from top order batsmen Delwyn Brownlee, Nicki Frew, Katrina Withers, and Catherine Campbell, but it progressively fell behind the asking rate to be 190 for seven after 50 overs. The best of East's bowlers were Helen Bastion and le Comber, with two wickets each. Results: St Albans 97 (N Payne 22; P Flannery 2-12, D Hockley 4-14) lost to Lancaster Park 100-1 (Hockley 21, T Anderson 53no). Umpires: K Reed, M Collins.
