Date-stamped : 17 Dec96 - 06:18 17 December 1996 Roberts Shows Class With 85 TIMARU -- Canterbury batsman Ryan Roberts showed why he is highly rated when he steered the New Zealand Development cricket team to a five-wicket win over a South Canterbury XI in Timaru yesterday. Roberts led the age-group team home, making an unbeaten 85 as it reached 200 for five in the 47th over in reply to South Canterbury's 199 for nine. Roberts, the only century-maker after seven games on the national side's South Island tour, hit seven fours and two sixes in his match-winning knock. It was an innings that caught the eye of development team manager John Howell. "A number of our batsmen have got very good ability," Howell said. "But Roberts has also shown good fighting qualities, and he's a very good stroke-maker." Roberts shared an 82-run partnership for the fifth wicket with former North Otago player Marcel McKenzie, who scored 20. They came together with the score at 112 for four in the 19th over. -- NZPA Source :: The Christchurch Press (http://www.press.co.nz) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
