Date-stamped : 24 Feb97 - 10:14 19 February 1997 Rain Saves Youth Team From Defeat HAMILTON -- Cambridge's weather probably saved the New Zealand Youth XI from a second outright defeat yesterday from two matches on its internal tour. Increasingly heavy rain led to the abandonment of the team's three-day match against a Northern Districts Development XI when it was close to a climax in the final session at Victoria Square, Hamilton. ND looked the likely winner. It needed 40 more runs to reach the target of 157 from 22 overs with six wickets left and with Sean Lambly (60 not out) scoring freely. The Youth XI bowlers were troubled by a wet ball well before the finish. Earlier, the Youth second innings struggled, adding 66 in 35 overs for the loss of four wickets before lunch. Top-scorer Jarrod Englefield fell without addition to his overnight 69, but opener Richard Scragg went on to 57 and the tail hung around long enough to reach 252. Opening bowler Joseph Yovich, who twice left the match to represent the main ND side at cricket Max, took three for 28 from 18 overs. Scores: New Zealand Youth 175 and 252 (J Englefield 69, R Scragg 57, M Papps 24, J Oram 22; J Yovich 3-28, T Anderson 3-88, G Donne 2-11), Northern Districts Development 271 and 117-4 (S Lambly 60no, P Baber 24, R West 2-45, R Burson 2-31). Rain stopped play. -- NZPA Source :: The Christchurch Press (http://www.press.co.nz) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
