Date-stamped : 04 Feb97 - 06:16 3 February 1997 Sydenham Scrapes Into Final After One-run Win Sydenham scored a nerve-racking one-run win over Burnside West-University at Sydenham Park yesterday to advance straight to the final of the Trust Bank Cup limited-overs cricket competition. Sydenham will host the final on March 2 against the winner of the Burnside West-East Shirley match at Burnside Park on Thursday after East beat Riccarton in the minor semi-final play-off by 53 runs. Sydenham's 141 in 45.3 overs did not seem enough despite the two-paced pitch, especially when Burnside West had made a bold start reaching 70 for one. However, its next eight wickets crashed for 40 runs, leaving the visitors 110 for nine. The game took another twist when tail-enders Kristian Nuttall and Hamish Kember defied the Sydenham bowlers, eking out run after run. The pair added 30 and were poised to overtake Sydenham when Greg O'Reilly bowled Nuttall for nine leaving Burnside-West one run short of a tie with Kember unbeaten on 15. That would have been enough, for on a countback after the first 15 overs Burnside-West was ahead. The substance to the Sydenham innings was provided by No. 4 Carlos McGillivray with a fine 55 until he was eighth out. Burnside-West's attack was headed by Kember's demanding left-arm spin who captured three for 15 from 10 overs. Burnside's bright beginning was provided by Adrian McFedries, Mark Hastings, and Simon Packman but once this trio was dismissed it folded against the Sydenham attack headed by Todd Harris, O'Reilly, and McGillivray who had a fine all-round match. East Shirley's win was based on some swashbuckling batting from Craig McMillan and a tight performance from its experienced bowling attack. McMillan scored 70 off 57 balls with his half century coming from just 30 balls. He dined out on the medium-pacers as Riccarton captain Gary Stead kept his slow bowlers from the onslaught. McMillan was particularly severe on Phil Monk and Neil Maxwell, with the latter being slammed for three boundaries in his second over. Scott Pawson, with an intelligent half century, and the irrepressible Scott Flewellen lifted East's total to 220. Riccarton's chase was built around Maxwell. While he remained, the target appeared achievable but his dismissal in the 36th over marked the end of the chase. Maxwell made 89 although he was involved in three run-outs, including the dangerous Stead brothers, Wayne and Gary.
