Date-stamped : 25 Jun97 - 06:18 11 June 1997 Bid To Keep Fleming In Canterbury A couple of Christchurch companies have expressed interest in helping retain New Zealand cricketer Stephen Fleming in Canterbury. Fleming, 24, is considering a move to Wellington which he feels may offer more job opportunities after cricket. Canterbury Cricket Association chief executive Tony Murdoch said talks have been held with Fleming and the province is keen to keep his services. It is looking at ways of assisting Fleming and, since news of his possible move became public, Murdoch has received some interest from local firms which may provide options for Fleming to consider. Fleming, who has returned to India with a Dipak Patel-organised unofficial New Zealand team for a series of one-day matches, is still undecided on his future said Murdoch. He expected Fleming to make a decision soon after his return. "The discussions we have had with Stephen have been positive and he has shown a lot of maturity and judgement," Murdoch said. Canterbury recently re-signed Chris Cairns for a further five seasons after Auckland had been negotiating with the all-rounder during the off-season. The future involvement of Canterbury coach Denis Aberhart and selection panel convener Brian McKechnie is likely to clarified by next week. Murdoch said he is waiting to hear from the duo now that the format of the new season, probably including Conference Cricket, is taking shape. Canterbury has decided that the provincial coach cannot also be the southern conference team coach. Thoughts of having the Canterbury coach as a full-time position have been shelved with the position to remain part time, the introduction of the proposed regional tournament having shortened the Shell Trophy competition.
