Date-stamped : 06 Nov96 - 14:12 From The Press November 06, 1996 Academy Provides Fireworks The New Zealand Cricket Academy provided the batting fireworks against a Canterbury XI on Guy Fawkes Day to celebrate the last day of play before breaking up at Hagley Oval yesterday. Stephen Lynch and Craig McMillan produced sublime innings of contrast, while Llorne Howell dedicated himself to crease occupation and hoisted a monumental 150. When play stopped the Academy side had reached 398 for nine having easily overtaken the Canterbury XI which had made 263 the previous day. The Academy side had resumed in some strife at 50 for three, but Howell and Lynch defied the early-season trend by batting through the pre-lunch session. Lynch played a stroke-laden innings, marked by fine cutting and hooking, and had a century in his sights before being adjudged leg before wicket to left-arm spinner Carl Anderson. Lynch's 83 included 10 fours from 141 balls and with Howell 118 was added. Lynch's replacement McMillan was in punishing mood and he struck 67 from the Canterbury attack in just 60 balls with four sixes and six fours. With Howell they carried the score beyond the Canterbury XI before McMillan aimed another aggressive shot at Anderson and was bowled. Anderson, 19, coped well with the barrage and bowled with good control into the north-easterly breeze to claim three wickets from a lengthy spell. Howell had been told by Academy coach Dayle Hadlee to aim for 150 at the start of play and he achieved exactly that applying himself impressively, his patient knock punctuated with occasional bursts of aggression. His innings lasted just over six hours from 273 balls with 20 fours and a six. Greg Loveridge finished off the run-scoring spree for the day with an unbeaten half century on a wicket playing more easily throughout the day.
