Date-stamped : 25 Nov96 - 06:13 22 November 1996 Le Comber To Captain Canty Karen Le Comber assumes the leadership of an altered Canterbury women's cricket team to defend the national title at Auckland in January. Le Comber takes over from the retired Sarah Illingworth, gaining the position ahead of the likes of the experienced Debbie Hockley and Trudy Anderson who may be nearing the end of their careers. Selection panel convener Brigit Hearn said the appointment of Le Comber was a long-term selection. Hockley will be vice-captain. Apart from having to find a new captain, the selectors, Hearn, coach Greg Hills and Vicki Burtt, have also had to replace Illingworth behind the stumps, Kirsty Flavell, Jennifer Logan and Justine Russell. Sally Frahm, a prolific run-getter last season, will be the new wicketkeeper. Frahm, Helen Watson and Helen Bastion are newcomers to Canterbury colours but have attended the tournament in other teams. Sarah Helmore and Jane Geary missed selection from the 14-person squad. "Replacing players of the calibre we have lost is tough but we have depth and for the players there it will be more of a challenge," Hearn said. Team: Karen Le Comber (captain), Lisa Astle, Sally Frahm, Trudy Anderson, Debbie Hockley, Nicola Payne, Helen Watson, Helen Bastion, Paula Flannery, Katrina Withers, Catherine Campbell, Helen Fouhy.
