Date-stamped : 14 Nov96 - 14:12 13 November 1996 Wellington's Batsmen Sail Past Canterbury Wellington, with Phil Chandler dominant, was untroubled to cruise past Canterbury's modest first-innings effort in the two-day cricket match which was drawn at Hagley Oval yesterday. Chandler stroked his way to an accomplished 92 and, with healthy contributions from opening partner John Aiken (43) and No. 4 Robbie Kerr (51), Canterbury's 162 was overtaken in the early afternoon. Chandler and Aiken, both left-handers, posted an opening stand of 124 in smart time, Chandler chalking his half century in just 45 minutes from 45 balls. He slowed in the latter part of his innings and was dismissed when in sight of a century, caught at slip, his 92 including 14 fours. Chandler, who made a good impression last season has taken a liking to the Hagley No. 1 wicket scoring 80 there for Wellington in a pre-season match against Canterbury last season. Chandler and Kerr then batted freely adding 64 for the third wicket and powered past Canterbury's score. Wellington gave almost all its batsmen an outing before declaring with about an hour to play. Canterbury in reply was 46 for two at stumps with Gary Stead (21) and Scott Pawson being dismissed. Brad Doody and Craig McMillan batted out time, both finishing unbeaten on 10. Young left-arm slow bowler Carl Anderson, who impressed the previous week bowling against the New Zealand Academy, again showed promise claiming three for 64 from two solid spells, completing 23 overs. Nine overs from Craig McMillan reaped two wickets while Scott Pawson also captured a brace from 15 overs. Short scoreboard: Canterbury 162 and 46-2 (G Stead 21) drew with Wellington 297-9 dec (P Chandler 92, R Kerr 51, J Aiken 43, extras 23, C Nevin 21; C Anderson 3-64, C McMillan 2-28, S Pawson 2-40).
