Date-stamped : 14 Dec1998 - 20:41 21 October 1996 Leading sides crash in low-scoring round by Geoff Longley Two previously unbeaten teams, St Albans and Old Collegians, un- ceremoniously lost their records in a low-scoring third round of Trust Bank Cup one-day cricket on Saturday. Old Collegians were skittled for 55 by Riccarton, while St Albans could only muster 75 against Sydenham. Those results left Riccar- ton and Sydenham to share the lead on a day where ball dominated bat in humid conditions. Old Collegians, who had chosen to bat first struggled against Riccarton`s accurate attack with Lee Borcoski and Phil Monk to the fore. Medium-fast bowler Neil Maxwell, as he did the previous week, sliced through the lower order taking four wickets in five balls to complete Old Collegians` misery. Riccarton made short work of the token target getting there in the 11th over with Danny Grafton and Stu Gambles putting on 48 for the first wicket, while Old Collegians assisted by bowling 16 wides. Extras also played a prominent part of the Sydenham score reaching 41, including 29 wides. The game against St Albans was played in taxing batting conditions, with a lush out- field at Sydenham Park. Sydenham`s middle and lower order helped rescue the innings which was wobbly at 58 for four, the last six wickets adding 112 runs. The home side then supported its bowlers well in the field as St Albans crashed to 24 for five, with the outcome inevitable. Matthew Loose had the most remarkable bowling figures of three for six from 1.4 overs. Astle takes three wickets East Christchurch-Shirley overcame Old Boys in another low- scoring tussle, at Burwood Park. Old Boys was restricted to 117 by East`s demanding bowling at- tack which had Carl Anderson and New Zealand all-rounder Nathan Astle each collecting three wickets, while David Grocott`s miserly 10 overs cost just nine runs with six maidens. However, East was soon in trouble at 27 for four and its first five batsmen fell to leg before wicket decisions, including Astle for 0, against the Old Boys attack led by Geoff Allott and Stu Roberts. Then teenage wicketkeeper-batsman Michael Papps, in his senior debut, batted impressively reaching an unbeaten 28 to steer the home side through in the 41st over. Woolston WMC`s 137 from 42 overs was not a big score, but proved demanding for Lancaster Park for much of the day, until Nick Sargisson and Mark Lane combined for an unbroken 55-run sixth- wicket stand at Ensors Rd. Yet again extras played a prominent part, top scoring for both sides. In the Woolston innings extras totalled 47, including 36 wides, with only Englishman Tim Walton, whose 31 had five fours and a six, making much headway. This was against a bowling attack led by Chris Cairns, making a fleeting appearance before New Zealand duties, John Quinn, and newcomer Andrew Richardson who all took three wickets. Park had slipped to 83 for five, battling against some tight bowling from debutant off-spinner Stephen Gibson (one for 17 from 10 overs), before Sargisson and Lane combined. Extras totalled 45, with 38 wides, for a joint match contribution of 92. Burnside West-University`s Campbell Ogilvie produced the star performance with an unbeaten 46 and three wickets as his side eked out a 14-run win against Marist at Burnside Park. Ogilvie and Graeme White resuscitated an ailing Burnside innings at 73 for six to reach 177 for nine. Marist looked comfortable needing 40 from 10 overs after Gerard Killick and Mike Simpson added 65 for the fifth wicket. But Russell Haglund`s off-spinners turned the tables for Burnside in the closing stages.
