Date-stamped : 31 Oct96 - 10:12 28 October 1996 Poor batting key to Canterbury`s loss Canterbury`s Karen le Comber plays a pull shot in the one-day women`s cricket match against Auckland at Garrick Park yesterday. The Auckland wicketkeeper is Ceri Aldis. Auckland won by three wickets. Sound batting by Lossie Harford took the Auckland women`s cricket team to a three-wicket win over a Canterbury XI in its 50-over cricket match at Garrick Park yesterday. Batting first, Canterbury lost Sally Frahm early but a fine second-wicket stand between Trudy Anderson and Karen le Comber took the score to 79. With Nicola Payne making a use- ful 19, Canterbury was handily placed at 109 for three. However, the next seven wickets fell for just 18 runs, Canter- bury being dismissed for 127 in the 44th over. Most of the dam- age was done by off-spinner Sasha Cowlrick, who claimed four for nine from six overs. The Auckland innings was held together by Harford, who looked to play off the front foot wherever possible. After opening, she took the score through to 124 before being bowled for 58. East notches up thrilling first win East-Shirley posted its first win in senior women`s cricket with a thrilling last-ball win over Marist while competition leader Lancaster Park had an emphatic win over second-placed St Albans. At Burwood Park, East-Shirley -- chasing 199 -- lost a quick wicket but a superb second-wicket partnership between Mandy Ormandy and Helen Watson produced 99. In another good partnership for the third wicket, Ormandy and Jess Ramage took the score through to 170 when Ormandy was well caught at mid-wicket for 48. Ramage followed a short time later for a well compiled 35. Accurate in-swing bowler Fleur McKechnie made run-scoring diffi- cult for the later batswomen but the target rate of four an over was maintained. The injured Kimberley Minogue was the last East batter and she scrambled through for a single off the last ball to give East the narrowest of wins. McKechnie finished with an im- pressive five for 37. Earlier in the day, Marist had made 198 for eight. Opener Nicki Frew made a sound 37 and at first drop Katrina Withers scored 20. However a collapse in the middle order had Marist struggling at 70 for five. At Ensors Road, Lancaster Park, put in to bat by St Albans, was given a solid start of 40 by openers Debbie Hockley and Trudy Anderson with the latter going on to get a valuable 45. Down the order Natasha Cox and Melanie Brown also made useful contributions, taking Park through to 177. The most success- ful St Albans bowlers were Jane Geary, with three for 35 off 10, and Nicola Payne, with two for 32. Park`s accurate new ball bowlers Cox and Helen Fouhy soon had the St Albans innings in tatters. Its fortunes were revived by a fine seven-wicket partnership of 63 between 15-year-old Kylie O`Loughlin, who made 25, and Anna Morris, who scored 38, but the tail was quickly wrapped up with Lancaster Park gain- ing a 74-run win.
