Date-stamped : 14 Dec1998 - 19:31 22 October 1996 Young spinner selected Teenage East Christchurch-Shirley slow bowler Carl Anderson is the notable newcomer to the Canterbury cricket squad named last night. Anderson, 19, a promising left-arm spinner, is the likely successor to Mark Priest when he steps aside. Anderson made a strong impression last year when promoted to senior lev- el, while still attending Shirley Boys` High School. "Priesty`s not going to go on forever and in picking Carl we are looking to the future. We`ll see how he shapes up," said Brian McKechnie, Canterbury selection panel convener. An 18-man squad was named to start training tomorrow and Thursday at Lancaster Park and prepare for pre-season matches, a Cricket Max competition and the first two rounds of the Shell Trophy and Cup competitions. The selectors, McKechnie, coach Denis Aberhart, and Murray Parker, have retained faith with talented young High School Old Boys quick bowler Shane Bond. He was selected in last season`s squad, but was soon sidelined with a stress fracture in his back. Two wicketkeepers, Ben Yock and Mark Lane have been named. Lane kept last season in Lee Germon`s absence, but Yock has con- tinued to make progress and his bold batting should count in his favour in the abbreviated games. No captain has yet been named but it is likely to be between last season`s captain Gary Stead and Darrin Murray, who has returned from in Holland. The squad is: Blair Hartland, Darrin Murray (Sydenham); Craig McMillan, Scott Pawson, Carl Anderson (East-Shirley); Gary Stead, Robbie Frew, Neil Maxwell (Riccarton); Brad Doody, Michael Sharpe (North Canterbury); Craig Cumming, Mark Priest (St Al- bans); Glenn Muir (Marist); Ben Yock, Shane Bond, Geoff Allott (HSOB); Mark Lane (Lancaster Park); Warren Wisneski (Old Col- legians). Unavailable: Michael Owens, Mark Hastings. Source :: The Press (http://www.press.co.nz) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
