Date-stamped : 13 Jan97 - 18:18 10 January 1997 New Cap Has Strong Incentive To Play Well Canterbury cricketer Sally Frahm has more than provincial pride to play for in the national women's cricket tournament in Auckland next week. Frahm is a new cap in the team, but said there would be an added incentive to do her best in memory of her mother who died in December. The 24-year-old has already played in the national tournament in the composition Pub Charity side, but a prolific season with the bat last year for Canterbury B earned her promotion to the A team. An opening batswoman for her St Albans XI, Frahm is likely to bat down the order at seven or eight for the Canterbury team. She will also take over the role of wicketkeeper with the retirement of Sarah Illingworth. Illingworth's retirement is one of four changes to last summer's successful team as Canterbury aims to win its 18th national title in 19 years. Justine Russell and Jennifer Logan have also retired and Kirsty Flavell has moved to Auckland. All-rounder Helen Watson will make her debut while Helen Bastion, a left arm medium pacer, has transferred from Central Districts. Starting on January 12 Canterbury will play two rounds of 50 over matches against Wellington, Auckland, and Central Districts with a final on the last day. Canterbury captain Karen le Comber considers Auckland the danger side. "They have got more depth than the others and we lost to them twice in warm-up games, but in a way that did us a favour. We've used it as motivation and worked that much harder," she said. Le Comber sees slick fielding, batting depth, and team spirit as the strengths of Canterbury. She will come into the batting order at number three after openers Trudy Anderson and Debbie Hockley. The middle order of Lisa Astle, Nicola Payne, Katrina Withers, Helen Watson, and Frahm has exciting potential. The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Withers, Helen Fouhy, and Bastion with back up from Watson and Astle. Spin variation will be provided by Catherine Campbell, Paula Flannery, and Nicola Payne. The team is: Karen le Comber (c), Trudy Anderson, Lisa Astle, Helen Bastion, Catherine Campbell, Paula Flannery, Helen Fouhy, Sally Frahm, Debbie Hockley, Nicola Payne, Helen Watson, Katrina Withers.
