Date-stamped : 12 Feb97 - 10:15 3 February 1997 Rashid Latif not available for Dhaka trip By Our Sports Reporter KARACHI, Feb 2: Rashid Latif on Sunday withdrew himself from the SAARC cricket contest to be played in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for which he was appointed vice-captain. The discarded Test wicketkeeper cited serious domestic commit- ments for pulling out. "I have to take care of certain serious assignments at home. It would be unwise to leave them at this stage," said Rashid. The Dhaka tournament will be played between Feb 17 and 28. The wicketkeeper, who toured South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1994-95 as vice-captain, said he would be informing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of his decision on Tuesday. "I am really grateful that they (selectors) selected me for the tour but I have problems of my own," he stated. Although Rashid Latif refused to reveal his commitments, it has come from the horse`s mouth that he is being approached by a cou- ple of English clubs to play for them on lucrative contract. Latif is expecting their telephone call for the confirmation of the contract. With Rashid Latif withdrawing from the SAARC event, the selectors will now search for another wicketkeeper. At the domestic front, PIA`s Javed Qadeer excelled with the ball and with the gloves in the Patron`s Trophy. He accounted for 25 batsmen behind the wick- ets besides scoring 200 odd runs with the willow. Qadeer has represented Pakistan in a one-day international when he played against Sri Lanka in the 1995 Asia Cup at Sharjah.
