Venue of 1st Test v Zimbabwe changed
A high-powered delegation comprising among them national captain Arjuna Ranatunga, manager Duleep Mendis, Cricket Board chief executive Dammika Ranatunga and secretary Tryphone Mirando have found the Tyronne Fernando Stadium unsuitable to conduct the first cricket Test between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe from September 11-15.
Cricket Board sources said as a result, the venue has now been shifted to the R. Premadasa Stadium.
The delegation found among other things, the outfield uneven and the stadium been totally neglected. If the Test was to be played there the Cricket Board would have to undergo heavy expenditure renovating it and bringing it up to international standards.
The Tyronne Fernando Stadium came for universal condemnation in December 1993 when play was possible only for two of the five days in the one-off Test between Sri Lanka and West Indies which also happened to be the fiftieth Test match played by Sri Lanka in its history.
Shortly afterwards the stadium underwent a major rehaul, but no Tests have been played there since.
The second Test in the short series will be played as scheduled at the SSC grounds from September 18-22.
All matches at the R. Premadasa Stadium in the four-nation Singer World Series other than the final will be played under lights. The stadium will host four of the seven matches in the tournament. The other three will take place at the SSC grounds.
The opening match of the tournament is between Australia and Zimbabwe on August 26 at the stadium.
The final on September 7 will be a day game at the stadium in order to give maximum viewing time for TV viewers over the world. Star TV and the local TV network TNL will cover the matches 'live'.
