The right hander who has already collected over one thousand runs in the current inter-school season scored a captain`s knock of 79 inclusive of two sixes and nine boundaries. He occupied the crease for a total of 220 minutes and faced 175 deliveries. He was also associated in a fourth wicket stand of 122 runs together with Indika Konara who made an equally good contribution of 42 runs. Konara stroked six boundaries and his innings lasted for 155 minutes. The medium paceman Ajith Agarkar caused the early damage with figures of 2 for 33 and was well supported by Aravinda Solanki and Sivasangar Singh. Earlier the visitors added a further 182 runs to their overnight total and went on to declare their first innings at 524 for 7 in 124 overs. Skipper Jyoti Yadav and Ajesh Agarkar continued from where they left on the opening day and further demoralised the opposition with a superb batting display. The pair figured in a fifth wicket stand of 166 runs and continued their dominance throughout the first session. Skipper Joyti Yadav hit a splendid 147 with the help of 20 bound- aries and in 299 minutes of batting time. Ajesh Agarkar took over the main role from there onwards and went on to reach the three figure mark with the help of two sixes and 19 boundaries. He oc- cupied the crease for a total of 207 minutes and faced 146 deliv- eries. Together with Sivasangar Singh they put on 85 runs for the seventh wicket in almost even time. In fact Singh collected his runs in just 34 deliveries while hoisting one six and stroking four boundaries. Left arm spinner Rangana Herath was the most successful bowler with figures of 4 for 86. In addition the medium paceman Romesh Fernando finished with 2 for 83. ===> DAY 3, 13 February 1997 Innings win for Indian u-19 By Dinesh Weerawansa The visiting Indian Under-19 team, led by Jyoti Yadev, opened their one-month tour of Sri Lanka on a winning note with an im- pressive innings and 122-run win over Sri Lanka Board President`s X1 in their three-day tour opener concluded at the Moors grounds, Braybrooke Place yesterday. Resuming the final day at 198 for 4 wickets, the home team were all out for 242 after 332 minutes of batting shortly before lunch yesterday. This was in reply to Indians` mammoth first innings total of 524 for 7 declared. One drop batsman Chintaka Jayasinghe who was not out on 79 on day two, missed what would have been a well deserved century by nine runs. Jayasinghe`s fighting innings finally ended when he en- tered his nervous nineties. He was going for a big hit which only resulted in being caught by Agith Agakar at long-off off left-arm medium pacer Ravindra Nain. Jayasinghe`s superb innings included three huge sixes and 13 boundaries to all corners of the grounds. It came off 221 balls in 227 minutes. Trailing by 282 runs on the first innings, Sri Lanka Board Presi- dent`s were forced to follow on with two sessions to service. They stared off well with openers Shan Mackay and Shantha Kalaw- itigoda putting on a healthy 72-run opening stand. Both made identical totals of 33. But since their departure, wickets tumbled at regular intervals and the Sri Lankan innings was in disarray. The last ten wickets fell with the addition of only 88 runs which speaks of the fight- ing qualities of the Indian bowlers who turned the match in their favour within a couple of hours. The men who destroyed the Lankan balling line-up were left-arm leg spinner Sivasargar Singh and medium pacer Agith Agakar. Singh who had four wickets to his credit in the Sri Lankan first in- nings, had another four-wicket haul (4 for 48) to complete a match bag of eight for 77. He gave a fine support to Agakar who was the architect of turning the match in Indian U-19`s favour. Agakar finished with 5 for 22 in the second innings. The visiting teams will travel to Kandy today to meet the Sri Lanka Under-19 in the first unofficial 4-day Test which starts at Asgiriya Stadium tomorrow. India Under 19 - 1st Innings (524/7 decl.)
