Date-stamped : 09 Mar97 - 22:26 9 March 1997 Injuries to noted Test stars By Ilyas Beg LAHORE, March 8: World-class paceman Waqar Younis has elbow- injury while Ijaz Ahmad Junior has damaged his knee. Still, both played the one-day cricket semi-final on Friday carrying those troubles. Pakistan cricket team`s physiotherapist Dr Dan Kiesel, talking exclusively to this correspondent, said on Saturday that Waqar Younis (Vicky) got injured when he fell on his right elbow during a training session. He made the bold decision to play the match for United Bank (UBL) team against the strong Allied Bank (ABL) side against medical advice and at the risk of aggravating the injury. It goes to his credit that Waqar bowled fast (excepting the last one over bowled with a shorter run-up) despite that trouble and also took three wickets. The physiotherapist treated Waqar so that the injury did not stop him from performing his duties. He expressed surprise over the "courage and commitment" of the paceman, who will be going to England this summer to honour a lucrative contract to play for Glamorgan county in the English cricket season. Dr Dan Diesel said that Ijaz Ahmad Junior fell on his right knee while fielding for the ABL side against UBL in the semi-final. He had advised him not to take part in the match further, but the youngster insisted to bat in the interest of the ABL team and also scored 29 runs. Dr Kiesel said that the extent of damage to the knee would be known after a few days. While replying to a question, the physiotherapist said that Saeed Anwar was regaining fitness fast. He said that rest taken by the opener after returning from Australia during Pakistan team`s tour had done a world of good to him. He main problem was under- nourishment because he could not take the risk to eat heavily be- fore opening the innings for the team or entering the ground for fielding. Now Saeed Anwar had been doing regularly doing running and physical exercises. Dr Kiesl opined that the left-hand opener would regain top physical fitness soon.
