Date-stamped : 06 Mar97 - 06:16 Report: ADBP v PIA NBP upsets calculations of favourites ADBP KARACHI, Feb. 22: Mohammad Javed and one-legged Shahid Anwar com- bined to help two-time winners National Bank upset the applecart of favourites Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan (ADBP) by seven wickets in the second round opener of the 16th National One-day Championship at the UBL Sports Complex here on Saturday. The two batsmen shared in an unbroken 118-run fourth wicket part- nership f rom 159 balls to set up an easy victory for NBP after ADBP had collected 220 for nine in 50 overs. NBP`s victory came in 46.2 overs when Mohammad Javed hit a straight bound ary off Naveed Nazir for his sixth four in an 82-ball 59. Skipper Shahid Anwar, who had to bat with Sajid Ali as runner af- ter pulli ng a hamstring, remained unconquered on an elegant 69 from 120 balls that wa s punched with seven hits to the fence. "I pulled it (hamstring) while taki ng a quick single. I don`t think I will be available for the second match wh ich is on Monday. Here I say, the itinerary is very tough as we have played three match in four days. Had there been a gap of two days or so, the players would have also got a well deserved rest and my injury would have also got better," Shahid Anwar said later. Before the start of their innings, National Bank were fined Rs 2,500 and lost one over when they failed to complete their 50 overs in 210 minutes. They were, however, lucky not to lose more overs as when the clock clicke d 1:00 p.m., they were bowling the 47th over. "I enjoyed the knock as the wicket was more helpful for the seamers," Javed said later, adding: "It i s always a good feeling when you get runs on these type of wickets." Javed was adjudged Man-of-the-Match for his all-round performance which a lso saw him grab two wickets for 44 runs besides a throw from square-leg whic h beat a sprinting Mansoor Rana by a couple of yards who was attempting a second run. For Javed, this tournament is going pretty well. He not only has taken fi ve wickets for 156 runs, he has scores of 55, 15, 62 not out besides today`s 59 not out. The work of Shahid Anwar and Mohammad Javed was, however, made easier by Sajid Ali who scored a whirlwind 55 from 50 balls with 10 blistering boundaries. Sajid Ali, who failed to justify his talent in 10 one-day inter- nationals he played for Pakistan, was ruthless specially with Shoaib Akhtar when he to ok 29 runs (15 in the first and 14 in the second) in his first couple of ove rs to put NBP at 39 from first four overs. The aggressive opener continued his assault when he helped Na- tional Bank capitalise the first 15 overs by scoring 95 runs be- fore he was caught in the deep by Atif Rauf off Manzoor Elahi. A form-struggling Saeed Azad when departed 11 runs later, panic creeped in National Bank ranks but Shahid Anwar and Mohammad Javed played brilliant innings to steer the team home without any further damage. "I don`t think we bowled and fielded well. 22 0 was a good score on a wicket which was helping the seamers but we couldn` t come to terms. Sajid (Ali), Shahid (Anwar) and Mohammad Javed played inni ngs of contrasting styles but the knock of Javed was the best," ADBP skipper Manzoor Elahi said. ADBP`s 220 mainly revolved around a gallant innings of unbeaten 55 by Jav ed Hayat who hit four fours and a six in his 51-ball knock. Hayat, who had scored his initial runs with ones and twos, cut lose in th e final four overs when he helped ADBP collect 33 runs including 15 runs in the final over with two fours and a six off Salman Fazal. ADBP were virtually left on the ropes by the three National Bank bowlers Athar Laiq, Naeem Ashraf and Zafar Iqbal when they ex- ploited the conditio ns well to first leave the opposition to 37 for the loss of Zahoor Elahi, wh o struggled for 21 balls for his three, Ghaffar Kazmi, who got eight from 2 4 balls, and Atif Rauf, who faced 27 balls for his six. Later, Mohammad Javed tied ADBP into further knots by running out Mansoor Rana and later claiming the wickets of Mohammad Asif (16) and Mohammad Al i (6). "It was a good toss to win. I think we won half of the match by that ," Shahid Anwar said. Source :: The Dawn (http://www.xiber.com/dawn) Contributed by Vishwa ( vg@cricinfo.com )
