India A packed with hopefuls for game against SA

29 November 1996

For the three-day game, beginning December third at Nagpur, the national selectors picked a side full of those who are hopeful of forcing their way back into the national eleven after being dropped, and those who hope to jump the queue and crash into the top ranks.

In the former category, include Navjot Singh Sidhu, Ajay Jadeja, Vinod Kambli, Aashish Kapoor and W V Raman, the last named being picked as captain ahead of North Zone skipper Sidhu.

Among the hopefuls, include D Ganesh, Sairaj Bahutule, and Pankaj Dharmani.

However, the interesting point here is that irrespective of performance in this game, none of the India A outfit will make it to the team for the third Test versus South Africa beginning December 8 at Kanpur - for the simple reason that the side will be picked, and announced, tomorrow (November 30).

So the best the hopefuls can think of is coming up with performances good enough to convince the selectors that they deserve places on the squad that will be picked, early December, for the reciprocal tour of South Africa.

The full India A outfit reads: W V Raman (captain), Navjot Singh Sidhu, Ajay Jadeja, Vinod Kambli, S Sharad, Pankaj Dharmani, Rajiv Nayyar, Wasim Jaffar, Aashish Kapoor, Sairaj Bahutule, D Ganesh, Sandip Sharma, Arindam Sarkar and D Kartik.
