Match Report North West v Western Province 9 November 1996 Cool Commins Steers Western Province to Victory Jack Botha John Commins steered Western Province to another nail-biting vic- tory over North West at the Gert van Rensburg Stadium in Foch- ville last night. Requiring 244 to win their Standard Bank league match, Province struggled at times although Desmond Heynes (34) had given them a sound start. However, Province had slumped to 47 for three before Commins came in, took a firm grip on the game and led his team to victory. He put on 56 runs for the fifth wicket with Eric Simons (40) then with Dave Rundle he added 72 for the seventh wicket. When Rundle out with 34 needed for victory Commins and Paul Kir- sten (10 not out) saw their side home in the last over. North West, spurred on by their shock victory over league leaders Northern Transvaal, on Wednesday, fought mightily. Morne Strydom, man of the match against Northerns for his bowl- ing, did well enough to qualify for the accolade with his bat- ting. His 92 and a hard hit 77 not out by Martin Venter formed the backbone of North West`s innings. However Commins was named man of the match.
