Date-stamped : 09 Apr97 - 06:23 19 March 1997 Vettori Enters One-day Arena Daniel Vettori's meteoric rise in New Zealand cricket continued yesterday when elevated to the national one-day side to play Sri Lanka in the three-match BNZ series. Vettori, 18, who claimed his first five-wicket haul at test level in the midst of a nine-wicket "Man of the Match" performance in the second test this week, was deliberately left out of the previous one-day series against England. However, Ross Dykes, convener of selectors, believes Vettori's most recent performances warrant inclusion for the one-day series which starts in Auckland on Saturday. "When we called Daniel into the test team against England we were aware of his youth and lack of experience at international level." "We decided to protect the attacking nature of his bowling by not exposing him to the one-day game, which requires him to bowl a flatter, more defensive trajectory. "Since then he has played a significant role in the test and shown a growing maturity. He will play a major role in both forms of the game in future and we feel the time is right to introduce him to the one-dayers." Vettori also displayed that maturity in the first two games against England and a case could have been made for including him for the one-dayers against England, even in an enlarged squad of 13, especially for the opening game in Christchurch played on a worn test wicket. This time, the selectors have named 13 with only opening bat Blair Pocock omitted from the successful test team. One-day specialists Chris Harris and Gavin Larsen return to the squad, while test 12th man Andrew Penn remains following the stress fracture which has sidelined pace bowler Geoff Allott. Penn will also provide cover for Heath Davis who experienced knee and achilles tendon trouble during the test series, but is expected to be fit for the matches in Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington. Penn and batsman Matt Horne, who missed the one-day series against England with injury, are newcomers to the international limited-over arena. Dykes said choosing 13 allowed a wider range of bowling options. The team is: Stephen Fleming (captain), Nathan Astle, Chris Cairns, Chris Harris (Canterbury); Heath Davis, Gavin Larsen (Wellington); Simon Doull, Bryan Young, Daniel Vettori (Northern Districts); Adam Parore, Dipak Patel (Auckland); Andrew Penn (Central Districts). Ticket sales for the day-night match at Lancaster Park on Tuesday are almost as high as for the sell-out game against England and supporters are advised to book in advance, if wanting stand seats.
