49th AGM of Cricket Board tomorrow

1 Mar 1997

It is not only the Cricket Board officials who are standing for election at the 49th annual general meeting tomorrow who will have to prove their eligibility but also those representing member clubs and associations who come to vote at the gathering.

According to the Cricket Board's constitution section 18 (a): ''All those nominated to represent member clubs and associations shall be persons who have represented a club (Affiliated or Controlling) or an association at cricket in any major tournament conducted by the Board.''

The same rule applies to those seeking election to the special committees namely tournament, umpires, sponsorship and tour organising, section 22 (III) c (i):

The only condition for doing so if they fail to fall within the qualification is to get prior written approval of the Sports Minister.

The eligibility of certain Cricket Board officials being elected to office has been raised by the CCC who have requested their letter to be tabled at the AGM.

There is also a flaw in the constitution which states: ''Having participated in any major tournament,'' which could mean a series of matches and not pertaining to just one match, as has been the case in the past.

Nominations for office-bearers of Cricket Board Gymkhana Club questions credentials of candidates

The Gymkhana Club which encompases CCC, CH and FC and, Queens Club have in a letter to the Sri Lanka Cricket Board president questioned the validity of nominations of candidates for office at the annual general meeting scheduled to be held on Sunday (March 2) at the Cricket Board headquarters.

The letter signed by the Gymkhana Club chairman Surath Wickramasinghe states: ``Has the president, who we are made to understand stands to be re-elected unopposed and the other persons nominated to stand for election to office other than the hony. treasurer and hony. assistant treasurer, represented any club or member cricket association in any major tournament conducted or approved by the Board in terms of the said rule ?

The letter calls for the persons standing for election to prove their validity with proof of dates of when and where they played such matches etc. unless of course they have obtained prior written approval of the Sports Minister to gain nomination.

Nominations for the Cricket Board's 49th AGM closed on February 6.

The Cricket Board's constitution with regard to election of office-bearers states that other than the hony. treasurer and the hony. asst. treasurer no person shall be nominated to hold any office unless he has represented a club (affiliated or controlling member) or a member cricket association at cricket in any major tournament conducted or approved by the Board. The existing constitution classifies the 'major' tournaments as division I, II and III.
