A massive unfinished fifth wicket stand between Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga (200 n.o) and Hemantha Wickremaratne (102 n.o.) put SSC in an impregnable position on the second day of their Segment 'A' P. Sara Trophy cricket encounter against Sebastianites C & AC at Maitland Place yesterday.

In reply to the Sebastianites 222 on the first day, SSC were 36 for 1 overnight and ended the day amassing 453 for 4 declared.

Sebastianites going in for the second time with a deficit of 231 were not so happily placed with 3 for 43 off 9 overs when play ended two overs short due to bad light around 6.10 pm.

The fifth-wicket pair of left-handers Ranatunga and Wickremaratne kept the scored board moving at a brisk pace. Arjuna Ranatunga arrived at the crease when his side had lost 4 for 136. He and Wickremaratne batted for 250 minutes without being separated utilising 59 overs for their enterprising stand.

Ranatunga had 22 fours and four sixes in his innings which lasted 203 balls and Wickremaratne six fours and two sixes utilising 173 deliveries in his unbeaten century.

Sebastianites 222 and 34 for 3 at close (V. Abeywardena 11, Ranga Yasalal 14 n.o, Pramodya Wickremasinghe 2 for 17).

SSC (36 for 1 overnight) 453 for 4 declared (Nisal Fernando 26, Aruna Gunawardena 36, Marvan Atapattu 60, Arjuna Ranatunga 200 n.o., Hemantha Wickremaratne 102 n.o.).
