Ananda, challenged by the positive 215 for 7 declared by the Thomians, closed in to be 102 for 1 at stumps at Mount Lavinia, yesterday.
S. Thomas' batting first, did not begin that well, losing their openers at 24. But the Thomians, who boasts of a strong batting line up this year, found their batsmen getting into their stride, with Bathiya Karunaratne leading the way with an enterprising knock of 75, which had one six and seven fours.
With other useful contributions coming from Peiris, Siriwardene and Mapatuna the Thomians got up to 215 for 7 and declared before tea.
Ananda depending on their spinners had just one pacie and had off spinner Nuwan Jayawardene claiming 5 for 76. Ananda batting in reply benefitting by a few crucial fielding lapses, scored 102 for 1 through an unfinished second wicket partnership of 79 runs between Basnayake and Chaturanga.

Put into bat, the Peterites scored a modest 170 helped by two fine knocks by opener Jerome Fernando (52) and Ishara Fonseka (43). Fernando had six hits to the ropes while Fonseka hit four boundaries and one six. Leg spinner Nimesh Perera was the main wrecker capturing four wickets for 60.
The Sebastianites scored 113 for 2 wickets by the close helped by an unbroken third wicket stand of 61 runs between opener Buddhika Mendis (51 n.o) and M. Fernando (20 n.o). Mendis had five hits to the ropes and one over it while Fernando had four boundaries. The match will be continued at 9.30 a.m today.
