No place for Slater

AUSTRALIA have dropped opening batsman Michael Slater for the first Test against West Indies starting in Brisbane on Friday.

It is the first time Slater has been left out in 34 Tests, though he was omitted from the World Cup party, and his place has gone to the young Victorian batsman Matthew Elliott, who makes his debut at this level after his 158 against the West Indies at Hobart.

Ricky Ponting is again entrusted with the problem No 3 batting position, and Ian Healy retains his place behind the stumps.

Jason Gillespie, 21, who played for South Australia against England A in Adelaide last week, is included in the 12-man line-up. Michael Kasprowicz, the former Essex fast-bowler, is expected to be 12th man, unless Glenn McGrath fails a late fitness test.

Shane Warne, whose last game for Australia was the World Cup final in March, declared himself fully fit.

Australia: *M A Taylor, M T G Elliott, R T Ponting, M E Waugh, S R Waugh, M G Bevan, -I A Healy, S K Warne, P R Reiffel, G D McGrath, J N Gillespie, M S Kasprowicz.
