Date-stamped : 18 Feb97 - 10:15 14 February 1997 Jamaica To Face Big Guns PORT OF SPAIN, Cana - The Trinidad and Tobago selectors have named West Indies players Brian Lara, Ian Bishop and Phil Simmons on a 14-man squad for their fourth round Red Stripe Cup cricket match against Jamaica, starting today. Lara, who performed well below his best in the recently concluded West Indies tour of Australia, will take over the captaincy from Richard Smith, who was in charge for the first three games. Also included are West Indies A team spinner Avidesh Samaroo, while Anil Balliram returns after missing the last game against the Leeward Islands because of injury. Balliram will undergo a fitness test on Thursday to determine whether or not he will play. Pacer Marlon Black and batsmen Darren Ganga and Andre Lawrence have been dropped while leg-spinner Rajindra Dhanraj was left out because of injury. Dhanraj injured a finger while playing against the Leewards and may be out of action for eight weeks. Trinidad and Tobago`s manager Ranjie Nanan said he was quite con- fident the team will perform well against Jamaica. "We are back to full strength and although rain caused us some problems against the Leewards, we will go into this game confi- dent of taking a full 16 points," Nanan said. "Brian`s presence will always add something to the team while we all know the kind of effect that Simmons and Bishop have on the team. They are 100 per cent team men and that on a young team like ours, is very important," added Nanan. Nanan said Dhanraj`s injury was unfortunate. "We will miss his experience but Dinananth (Ramnarine) and Avidesh (Samaroo) have the potential to fill the gap." Trinidad and Tobago, with 20 points are currently third in the standings behind leaders Barbados (48) and second place Jamaica (28). The Jamaicans, led by Delroy Morgan, arrived here on Carnival Tuesday night and enjoyed a net session on Wednesday at the Guaracara Park venue under the watchful eyes of coach Rohan Kan- hai. Taking part in the exercise were Test players Jimmy Adams and Robert Samuels, whose presence will also boost the Jamaicans. Fast bowler Kirk Powell is the only newcomer in the team. According to manager Chester Watson, the former West Indies fast bowler, Powell is a good prospect for the future. "Although Kirk is yet to appear in a Red Stripe match, he showed great promise in the Shell/Sandals Limited Overs tournament," said Watson. Watson, who played in seven Tests and took 19 wickets is confi- dent of doing well, although he conceded that anything can happen in cricket. "I always fancy my chances of doing well, although the ball is round and anything can happen. I am confident that the team will give a good account of itself," added Watson.
