Former Sussex seamer retires

9 August 1996

FORMER Sussex seamer Tony Pigott has announced his retirement from first-class cricket at the age of 38.

Pigott, who is currently second XI coach at Surrey, made a brief appearance for the first team earlier this season. He was forced into action when an injury-crisis hit the county on the eve of their NatWest Trophy first-round match at home to Holland, picking up two wickets and scoring a dozen runs.

``Lester'', as Pigott is known, joined Sussex in 1976 and made his first-class debut in 1978 - against Surrey - marking the occasion with a hat-trick with his first three wickets. He won his solitary England cap against New Zealand on the 1983-84 tour.

Pigott, who took 672 first-class wickets in a 20-year career, will continue to coach the second XI at Surrey.
