By Mike Beddow
August 7 1996
LESS than three weeks after Len Coldwell's last visit to New Road
for a former players' reunion, Worcestershire are in mourning for
their former England fast bowler who died suddenly, aged 63, in
his native Devon, writes Mike Beddow.
Coldwell, broad of chest and beam, was born in Newton Abbot and
played for Devon before making his Worcestershire debut in 1955.
He played for his adopted county for 14 years and took 1,076
first-class wickets, including 22 in seven Test matches.
The prime period in his career coincided with Worcestershire's
elevation towards unprecedented success. In 1961 he captured 140
wickets, and a year after that his England debut brought a return
of six for 85 against Pakistan, Then, in 1964, he was a member of
the Worcestershire side who won the championship for the first
time.
