Date-stamped : 27 Jul96 - 10:18 County Championship 1996 Glamorgan v Lancashire Sophia Gardens, Cardiff 25, 26, 27, 29 July 1996 ====> REPORT (Day 1, 25 Jul 1996) Maynard`s onslaught rocks Lancs By Edward Bevan at Cardiff First day of four: Glamorgan (359-3) v Lancashire MATTHEW Maynard won an important toss on a pitch already offering some turn at Sophia Gardens and proceeded to play Motor Racing an unblemished innings to put his team in a commanding position. Maynard (147 not out) struck three sixes and 22 fours, including five boundaries in seven balls, in 183 minutes to record the 39th century of his career and his fifth this season. After a steady start, Maynard raced from 66 to 101 in just 13 balls in an impressive bout of controlled hitting. He shared a partnership of 66 with Hugh Morris (71), who was also on course for a hundred until he edged Peter Martin to the wick- etkeeper. Tony Cottey (74 not out) then helped his captain an unbroken 193 for the fourth wicket, a record against Lancashire. Cottey was at his best when countering the spin of Mike Watkinson and Gary Keedy with some nimble footwork. Glamorgan will be aiming for a first innings total in excess of 500 and by choosing three spinners - including the former Mill- field schoolboy Dean Cosker for his championship debut - they will be well equipped to exploit a wearing pitch.
