Date-stamped : 28 Jun96 - 14:17 NatWest Trophy, Round 1 Northamptonshire v Cheshire Northampton 25 June 1996 ====> REPORT Emburey hat-trick as records fall JOHN Emburey became only the second Northamptonshire bowler to claim a hat-trick in the 60-over competition as Cheshire suffered a nine-wicket mauling at Northampton. The 43-year-old former England spinner polished off the Minor Counties side`s innings by dismissing tail-enders Simon Renshaw, Andy Greasley and Nigel Peel with the first three balls of the 51st over. Emburey`s hat-trick came 33 years after David Larter achieved the feat against Sussex. Cheshire`s paltry 135 all out never looked likely to stretch the home side who coasted to victory with 35 overs to spare thanks to a fluent undefeated 69 off 63 balls from opener Richard Montgomerie. The victory came as sweet revenge for Northants who had been on the receiving end of a first-round upset against the same opponents at Boughton Hall, Chester, in 1988. Cheshire slumped to 56 for five after being put in by Rob Bailey but rallied with a sixth-wicket stand of 71 in 23 overs between Richard Hignett (52) and Steve Bramhall (23). Hignett, who hit seven fours in a pugnacious 95-ball knock to earn the man-of-the-match award, eventually fell to Paul Tay- lor off the last delivery of the 50th over. Emburey then did the rest as Cheshire lost their last four wickets in as many deliveries. Source :: Electronic Telegraph (http.//www.telegraph.co.uk) Contributed by Shash (shs2@*.cwru.edu)
